This week’s earworm: an arrangement of Svalbard Theme, from Orion’s Belt by Anders Enger Jensen. 🎵

Rating: Liked It. Review text as follows: Originally from the movie 'Orion's Belt', which I've never heard of, but is apparently a classic in Norway. A really nice arrangement of a soundtrack that has that mid-80's feel: harmonica (an instrument I typically underrate), saxophone, guitar. Really well done.">

Review text as follows: Discovered this by listening to Music for Programming #22. I can't claim to have listen to every track on this, and there are a few that aren't to my taste. But Abandon Window and Immunity are two I really like, and I look forward to exploring this a bit more.">

This week’s earworm’s an interesting one. It’s Intro, on the album Recomposed, by Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald. Finding a legitimate copy is tricky: I’ve only found this version of questionable provenance on YouTube Music. It’s also on Music for Programming, which is where I discovered it. 🎵

Review is as follows: like many things Oldfield, it took me a while for this to grow on me. It started with Wonderful Land (actually a cover from The Shadows), followed by Taurus 1 and QE2 respectively. I only grew to like the remaining tracks this week. All really good. Early Oldfield, so take from that what you will. But still good music. Rating: Liked It.">

Might be a bit early in the week but I’m calling it now: this week’s earworm is very likely to be songs from Eurovision Song Contest 2025, in Basel. 🎵

And I make no apologies for this. Well, maybe some apologies to Kev Quirk. 😁

Rating: Liked It. Review is as follows: I imagine this was a difficult series to make, given that it had to bridge the gap between season 1 and Rouge One. That probably explains all the time jumps, but it did make it harder to enjoy as much as the first one. There just wasn’t much time to just let the plot settle a little. That said, still a good watch.">

This is even more fascinating, as they had very little memory to work with, and had to make some significant trade-offs, like allowing Mario to go left. 📺

Review: If you’ve seen the game before, it’s clear that the composition took game-play as priority over the needs of making a song-like song. That is the right decision, but it does make the music laking in consistent themes for those that want something to listen too. But it’s still a good listen if you like EDM music.">

📺 House of the Dragon: Season 2 (2024)

I was late to this, but people said it was good, and they were right. This was an enjoyable watch. Stunning cinematography and sound design. The acting was decent, although maybe a little too dramatic. And the plot was excellent. I can understand and believe everyone's motivation, and it didn't descent into fan service (it would've been so easy to have Mr. Stark show up for no good reason. I'm glad they resisted). Looking forward to starting the next season.">

I first watched the English dub of this a while ago. It was the first Miyazaki film I saw, and I left feeling quite confused. I now wonder if the cuts are different. After watching the original Japanese version tonight, I felt like I understood peoples motivations better. Or maybe I’m just growing as a Miyazaki view. I do remember it being a beautiful film and it definitely left an impression on me after my first viewing. That impression still remains true today.">

It was a very good movie. I'd be hesitant to say that it's a great one. Partly because I found it to be a little too epic: it could've done more with less. And partly because I felt that certain plot moments lacked prior establishment, like why certain family weapon systems were where they were. But it's certainly a very well done movie, and I would watch it again.">

Score: Not For Me. This might be a bounce. I'm aware of the game (although I never played it myself) so I had hopes for an interesting story. And yeah, the plot is good. But the visuals are just a little too graphic for me. I couldn't make it through the second episode. A great example of Disney enshittification and promising more then they can deliver. Many of her other videos are great as well (I actually went on a binge session over the weekend). 📺

📺 Sugar: Season 1 (2024)

Review reads as follows: Nah, sorry. I couldn't get through the first episode. I know what they were trying for: classic story of the keen detective, with the fast car and the cool lady companions and all. But it just didn't gel with me (might be because I have no nostalgia for the format). Plus, the cuts across time were awkward: it made it hard to follow what was going on. I'm sure this is for someone, but it's definitely not for me. Overall review: poor">

Review reads as follows: A pretty competent action movie. Good example of what I'd call an 'airplane movie,' which is a movie that's good to watch on hour 7 of a 14 hour flight. A pretty thin plot that doesn't require a lot of concentration, yet lots of nice set pieces, and some lovely shots of European cities. Overall rating: okay">

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm generally a fan of Star Wars but the level of story telling that went into this made it so much better. It's not perfect — Andor's arc felt a little fragmented (he was sent to prison for… reasons? That had nothing to do with the garrison?) — but it didn't detract from the whole. Other than the plot, the acting, casting, scoring, etc. were all excellent. Definitely recommend. Rated: great">

I’m not an theme-park enthusiast but I found both Theme Park History and Defunctland really interesting channels to watch. HT to Reconcilable Differences and Really Specific Stories, which mentioned the two channels. 📺

Seems “Dreams” is the more popular one (I keep hearing it at the gym), but for myself, I just love the instrumentation of “Little Lies”. 🎵

Rediscovered Nigel Westlake’s Antarctica — Suit for guitar and orchestra. First heard it in Year 11 Music, when we had to study the score. Started listening to it again about a month ago. You’d want the version with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Slightly more refined than the original. 🎵
