The 90's Intro And Bumpers of the ABC Education Segment

There were a few guilty pleasures a ’90s kid could enjoy when they were home from school due to a cold or other mild illness. For me, that was watching the ABC Education segment. This was segment of educational shows that was broadcasted from 10:00 to 12:00 every weekday (except for school holidays). Each show went for about 20 to 30 minutes, and covered the usual topics one would encounter in school: maths, language, science. I can’t remember much of the shows themselves, although I do remember enjoying the computer animation the high school maths programs would use near the end of the segment.

But one thing I do remember, and remember looking forward to, was the intro (it begins after the station ident):

In hindsight, it is very much a product of its time, what with the synth theme, the colour scheme, and the funky animation. It evoked the sense of wind, of debris flying across the screen. Not entirely convinced that this was what the producers were going for.

Along with the intro would be bumpers between the show. This would usually be a variant of the intro theme, or occasionally the last few bars:

Near the turn of the century, the intro and bumpers was replaced with something a bit more understated and modern. It was still decent: nothing really wrong with it. But it just didn’t grab me like the 90’s one did:

I don’t think the segment is a thing anymore, at least on the main ABC channel. With the rise of the Internet, this sort of programming would be rather obsolete, so I can understand this being discontinued. But it was nice for a while, and it’s been nice revisiting these clips again, uploaded by some random YouTube uploader that maybe liked it as much as I did. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.
